1. GENERAL OVERVIEW
All** courses are offered as 90-minute classes that meet once a week for six-weeks. Students have the option to attend additional classes if they choose for an additional fee. **(The Therapeutic Class for Multiple Sclerosis and Other Chronic Illness is only 60 minutes.) All classes start and end with a relaxation/centering exercise. All classes include breathing exercises (pranayama), bending, stretching, twisting, posture, and balance (asana). All classes involve the use of the Sanskrit terms in addition to the Westernized names of the postures.
2. BASIC BEGINNER: This class is for first time yoga students who know very little or nothing about yoga. It is the most gentle and easiest of all Flo's classes. Students learn basic yoga postures (asanas), the correct use of props (strap, blocks, etc.) which may aid the student to safely practice an "asana", breathing exercises (pranayama), and relaxation techniques. This 6 - Week course is developed so that by the fifth week of classes, students are prepared to learn and safely perform the Sun Salutation - "Surya Namascar". The Salutation is a group of approximately 6-12 continuous asanas, repeated in sequence a number of times. Students are advised to complete two complete 6-week sessions of Basic Beginners before continuing on to Level II.
3. LEVEL II (Intermediate): This class is for students who have a prior working knowledge of yoga and desire a more challenging workout. Students should have either completed at least two 6-week sessions of the Basic Beginners Yoga Course, or have had previous yoga training elsewhere. This class may be described as an advanced beginners course or an Intermediate yoga practice. The Sun Salutation - "Surya Namascar", or some variation of it, is the warm-up for the Level II classes. In addition to reviewing and deepening poses learned in Basic Beginners Yoga, students will learn more involved and challenging asanas, and more involved "Pranayama" exercises. They will begin to add "mudras" and bandhas" to their practice and begin to expand their knowledge of yoga philosophy and delve a bit into the "Limbs of Yoga". Students are introduced to "Pratyahara" (control of the senses) and "Dharana" (concentration of the mind). Headstands are introduced in this courseed "asanas". Students will begin to explore "mantras" (chants) and deepen their meditation practice.
4. Therapeutic for Multiple Sclerosis & Other Chronic Illness This class is recommended for persons with disabilities caused by Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's Disease, or other chronic illness. It includes relaxation techniques with emphasis on breath (Pranayama), and a series of gentle stretching and twisting exercises (Asanas).
